Henry M. Schacht was born on February 28, 1916 in Pasadena, California. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley in 1936, he joined the University's News Service as a radio writer. In 1939, he was appointed director of Press and Radio for the University of California, College of Agriculture, a post he held until 1942. The cooperative, which processed, distributed, and marketed members' crops, was the largest company of its kind in the U.S. and, at one time, controlled 65% of the nation's diet canned fruit market.
